TRANSTHORACIC ECHOCARDIOGRAM

A transthoracic echocardiogram is an ultrasound of your heart done to view the heart valves, heart muscle and your main blood vessel (aorta) in detail.

WHY DO I NEED IT?
An echocardiogram uses sound waves to produce images of your heart so that your cardiologist can view the heart in more detail. These images allow for better view problems with the heart’s valves, chambers and blood vessels to diagnose congenital heart defects, disease and causes for shortness of breath and chest pain.

HOW IS IT DONE?
You will be asked to lie on your side for this assessment. Electrodes will be placed on your chest, and your cardiologist will measure your heart’s electrical activity and rhythm. During the transthoracic echocardiogram, your cardiologist will place a transducer firmly against the skin of your chest, over your heart. The transducer is then moved slowly back and forth while you inhale deeply and exhale. Ultrasound waves are then emitted, which will bounce off the heart to make images and sounds that can help your doctor judge your heart’s health. This transthoracic echocardiogram should only take about 30minutes to complete. 

WHAT ABOUT AFTERWARDS?
The images taken of the heart should be able to provide Dr van Rensburg with adequate information to make an accurate diagnosis and provide comprehensive treatment, preventing future complications.
